Anatomy of a Scene

Anatomy of a Scene is a Sundance Channel original series. Each month it dissects the art of filmmaking
The United States of Leland
This month, Anatomy of a Scene looks at The United States of Leland, which explores how a single crime ripples across a community. The film's central event is a murder that occurs one afternoon when Leland Fitzgerald (Ryan Gosling) kills a young autistic boy Ryan Pollard (Michael Welch) for no apparent reason. As the film moves back and forth in time, everyone around Leland tries to understand this inexplicable crime. His mother Marybeth Fitzgerald (Lena Olin) is shattered by the "why;" and his father Albert Fitzgerald (Kevin Spacey), a famous, acidic novelist flies back from Paris, but can not meet with his son. In the boy's reformatory, Leland meets Pearl, a teaching assistant/would--be writer, who sidles up to Leland to see if there might be a book in his story. Pearl pushes Leland to write out his thoughts and talk to him, going so far as to bribe a guard to get more time with Leland. But the more he learns about Leland, the more he cares for him.
