Happy, Texas is a silly movie, packed with jokes and wacky characters. I couldn’t help but feel that it was trying just a bit too hard to tickle me. Still, it got lots of laughs, thanks largely to Steve Zahn. Zahn plays Wayne Wayne Wayne, a convict on a chain gang scraping armadillos off the Texas highways.

He and his friend escape and steal the identities of Steve and David, two gay men who travel the country putting on beauty pageants for little girls. Unless the two cons want to blow their cover, they’ll have to put on a pageant and let the local gay men hit on them until the heat is off.

Happy, Texas has a great premise, some very likeable characters, and a charismatic Steve Zahn in the lead role. It’s not a perfect movie, but it’s worth a rent next time you’re in the comedy section.
