This movie won best Actor, Picture, Director and Screenplay. Ray Milland plays an alcoholic (non-)writer trying to get on the wagon. I wasn’t sure if this movie was to be taken like Reefer Madness, but it seemed much too genuine and well-written to be that easily dismissed. Some of the better scenes are Milland telling his bartender what alcohol does for him, Milland narrowly escaping his girlfriend’s parents, and a screamingly creepy hallucination with a mouse. Wilder was way ahead of his time on this one.
